COLUMBUS, TEXAS – In the early hours of this morning, the Columbus Fire Department responded to a car fire on Highway 71 near Richter Road. The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:00 AM, presented unique challenges due to the presence of magnesium in the vehicle and a ruptured fuel tank.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Efforts to extinguish the fire were complicated by magnesium components in the dash and center console, as well as a ruptured fuel tank that intensified the fire in the trunk area. These factors necessitated a specialized approach to fire suppression.
To combat the blaze, Columbus firefighters employed a two-pronged attack, including the use of a dry powder fire extinguisher, which proved effective in controlling the fire.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers and Bob’s Wrecker Service were also present at the scene, providing essential support during the operation. Despite facing multiple concurrent emergency calls, the Colorado County Sheriff’s Department Dispatchers maintained effective communication with the responding units, ensuring a coordinated response.
The incident did not report any injuries. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
