Houston police hit pedestrian along East Freeway

HOUSTON, Texas, Aug. 12, 2023 – A Houston Police Department vehicle struck a 67-year-old Hispanic male on I-10 East just before the 59 ramp at 12:45 a.m. on Aug. 12, according to authorities.

The incident occurred after officers entered I-10 east following the drop-off of a prisoner at the Joint Processing Center (JPC). A van in front of the police vehicle suddenly hit its brakes, causing the officer to swerve to avoid a collision. In doing so, the officer ended up hitting the pedestrian, who may have been under the influence of alcohol.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.

It is not clear why the man decided to cross the freeway, since there was a dedicated pedestrian bridge just feet away.
