Construction worker killed, another seriously injured in crash involving intoxicated driver

HOUSTON, TX – A construction worker was fatally struck, and another was seriously injured, in a crash involving a suspected intoxicated driver in the 4100 block of West Orem earlier this morning in front of Madison High School.

According to the Houston Police Department, the incident occurred around 8:48 a.m. when a Nissan Sentra, driven by a 39-year-old man, disregarded traffic barriers set up to protect a sidewalk construction crew. The vehicle struck and killed one worker and seriously injured another. A third worker narrowly avoided being hit.

The Sentra continued into a utility pole before spinning into the intersection and colliding with a Lexus. The driver of the Lexus was not injured. The driver of the Sentra showed signs of intoxication at the scene and was detained. Charges are pending as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office assists with the investigation.

The next of kin for the deceased worker has been notified. Houston Police emphasized the preventable nature of this tragedy, urging drivers never to drink and drive.
