HOUSTON, Texas – A 1-year-old girl is in critical condition after drowning in a bathtub shortly after 8 p.m. this evening in the 5200 block of Sherman Street.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers and Houston Fire Department personnel responded to a 911 call reporting a child drowning.

Paramedics performed CPR and resuscitated the child before transporting her to a hospital that specializes in treating children. She remained in critical condition at the time of the briefing.

Police said the mother was home with the girl and an 8-year-old child when the incident occurred. It was not immediately clear whether the mother was in the bathroom when the drowning happened.

Detectives from HPD’s Special Victims Unit were responding to investigate. Police said the incident was being investigated as an accident, but the investigation remained in its early stages.
