Suspect dies after being struck by deputy’s vehicle during pursuit in Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – A suspect was pronounced deceased after being struck by a deputy’s patrol vehicle during a pursuit involving Precinct 7 and Precinct 3 Constable deputies.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the pursuit originated when Precinct 7 deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations, including speeding over 90 miles per hour without headlights. The suspect vehicle exited the freeway at Garrett Road traveling approximately 120 miles per hour, at which point deputies lost visual contact.

Precinct 3 deputies later relocated the suspect vehicle and attempted another stop. The suspect continued evading, running a red light and traveling at speeds over 90 miles per hour without headlights. The suspect lost control at a curve, left the roadway, and crashed into a tree line.

Following the crash, the suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot. As a deputy turned his vehicle around to pursue them, one suspect fell in front of the patrol unit. The deputy attempted to brake but slid due to muddy and slippery ground conditions, striking the suspect. The suspect became lodged underneath the patrol vehicle and was dragged approximately 10 feet before becoming dislodged.

Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures until EMS arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The reason for the suspect’s initial evasion has not yet been determined.
