Woman arrested after fatally striking bicyclist crossing Hwy 6 in front of her husband, then fleeing the scene

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – A woman riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a vehicle early Sunday morning in west Harris County.

The crash occurred around 4:29 a.m. on April 13, 2025, in the 7500 block of State Highway 6 South at the intersection of Empanada Drive. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Ashley Mae Nelson was riding westbound across the highway. Her husband was riding a bicycle directly behind her at the time of the crash.

Nelson crossed all lanes of traffic outside of a crosswalk and failed to yield the right of way when she was struck by a red Ford or Toyota sedan traveling northbound in the number one lane.

The driver of the red sedan did not stop or render aid and fled the scene. Nelson was pronounced deceased at 4:38 a.m. due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The case remains under investigation by the Vehicular Crimes Division of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
