Parents Call for Resignation of Wharton Dual Language Academy Principal Veronica Celedon and HISD Superintendent Mike Miles

HOUSTON, TX – Parents of students at Wharton Dual Language Academy are calling for the resignations of Superintendent Mike Miles and Principal Veronica Celedon. A small protest occurred earlier Wednesday morning at the academy’s campus, located at 900 W Gray St near Montrose. By the time we arrived, only a sign remained as evidence of the demonstration.

While specific reasons for Principal Celedon’s resignation demand remain unclear, Superintendent Miles has faced criticism over allegations of financial misconduct. In October 2024, the Texas Education Agency cleared Miles of accusations that he improperly diverted state funds to his Colorado-based charter school network, Third Future Schools. The investigation concluded that neither Miles nor his charter network violated Texas laws. (texastribune.org)

Despite the clearance, Miles’ tenure has been marked by controversy, including significant staff turnover and debates over disciplinary practices within the district. Some campuses have reported increases in suspensions and student misbehavior, while others have seen declines, reflecting the complex impact of changes implemented under Miles’ leadership. As of now, both Miles and Celedon remain in their respective positions. The Houston Independent School District has not issued an official response to the parents’ demands.
