Fatal shooting involving off-duty officer

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, Calif., August 9, 2024 — According to police, an off-duty officer was involved in a fatal shooting near the intersection of Haskell Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard. The incident led to a significant police response and a temporary shutdown of traffic in the area.

Police closed the roads from Haskell Avenue to Orion, and multiple units were dispatched to the scene. Authorities began investigating a possible second suspect fleeing southbound near the 405 freeway. Shortly thereafter, police requested medical assistance for a suspect with a gunshot wound, while the investigation into the second suspect continued.

It was reported that the off-duty officer involved in the shooting had contacted police after firing shots. The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear at this time.

The fire department confirmed one fatality at the scene, and EMS 15 was released from duty, though support for the ongoing police investigation continued.

It was confirmed that one person was fatally shot, and two suspects were detained at the scene. Police confirmed that there were no outstanding suspects or victims, and the perimeter around Haskell and Strathern was lifted.

A sedan was later located facing southbound near the exit ramp on Roscoe, east of the 405. The driver of the sedan nearly struck several officers before being stopped.
