Smokey conditions on the Eastex Freeway were from a large commercial building fire in northeast Houston

A fire broke out Sunday afternoon at a tire shop in the 14300 block of Old Humble Road in northeast directly across from the Eastex Park & Ride. Houston firefighters did not have to travel far as this fire broke out in front of their fire station.

Firefighters appeared to have concentrated their efforts at a tire shop next to O.T’s. Bait and Tackle, at the M& V Express Tire shop. An auto repair shop, Alex Tailerde Mecanica, an auto repair shop may have been damaged as well in the process. Pollos Blanquita, a taco truck that sits in the O.T’s Bait and Tackle parking lot, appears to not have been damaged and patrons were still dining there.

At one point, a grass fire broke out in a field across the street, on the property of the Eastex Fire Station. This was a secondary fire that was caused by the tire shop fire. This secondary fire was started in part because of the severe drought Houston and the rest of Texas has been experiencing.

Centerpoint Energy also responded to cut power to the buildings affected. At this time, there is no word on firefighter or civilian injuries or the extent of the damages.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from the Eastex freeway, and as far south as downtown, where we first saw it.

It is not known at this time what caused the fire. If you have any information, you are urged to contact the Houston Fire Department Arson Unit at 713-227-8477.
